What causes angular cheilitis is the infection of the corners of the mouth by the fungus candida albicans or by a bacteria.
The infection happens as a result of the accumulation of saliva in the sides of the lips which favors the growth of the fungus or the bacteria.
People who are using dentures that do not fit properly are more at risk of having this problem. That is due to the fact that, ill-fitting dentures cause the over closure of the mouth. which creates folds in the sides of the lips and favors the infection.
Also, the constant licking or biting of the lips or the drooling during sleep can also cause saliva to accumulate in the mouth corners to cause the infection.
It has also been established that, the people who are suffering from a deficiency in iron or vitamin B-12 or folate are more vulnerable to this problem.
